During the reporting period, intensified insecurity in Maw Taung, Tanintharyi Township, Mergui-Tavoy District triggered new displacement as civilians fled their hometowns in search of safety.
In Doo Pla Ya and Hpa-an Districts—particularly in Hpa-an, Paing Kyone, and Myawaddy (MWD) Townships—shifts in the presence of armed groups led to clashes between the State Administration Council (SAC) and newly established armed actors. These incidents heightened fear and uncertainty within communities, disrupted daily life, and increased protection concerns. As a result, some households relocated to safer areas, while others remained despite ongoing threats and instability.
In Mu Traw District, the internally displaced population rose to approximately 4,165 individuals, while in Billin Township, Doo Tha Htu District, an additional 4,911 individuals were newly displaced. These movements were primarily driven by heightened tensions, airstrikes, and fighting around civilian areas, forcing families to abandon their homes in search of safety.
Since the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar has endured five years of escalating conflict between the State Administration Council (SAC) and Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs). This protracted civil war has caused widespread civilian casualties, deepened poverty, and displaced millions.
Five years on, internally displaced persons (IDPs) remain unable to return home due to ongoing hostilities. Their urgent needs for safety, livelihoods, and humanitarian assistance persist across Karen State.
In this context, the Committee for Internally Displaced Karen People (CIDKP) has worked closely with district authorities and local leaders to provide emergency support. According to CIDKP’s records, more than one million IDPs continue to live in displacement across Karen State.
CIDKP’s initiatives emphasize community empowerment, inclusive participation, and resilience-building, ensuring that displaced families receive not only immediate relief but also opportunities to build a stronger future.
